Diving Into The Deep

Shelby Johnson was born right here in Escambia County and raised by a family who taught him the value of hard work and building things with your hands that you can be proud of. Both his father and grandfather worked with their hands for a living, and soon Shelby took after them, working first in carpentry and then beginning work as a contractor soon after.

First Chance

Shelby got his first chance at a leadership role working with Liggett Builders as a project manager from 1990 to 1994, only leaving that position to start his very own company Johnson Construction of Pensacola in 1994. The leadership skills that he learned in these formative years have since paid off immensely, with Johnson Construction becoming one of the top Gulf Coast construction companies for over 25 years.

Meet Shelby

With his work of 27 years at Johnson Construction of Pensacola, Shelby has shown how committed he is to building a Pensacola that not only looks beautiful but also functions incredibly well. One of the main focuses of Johnson Construction is Shelby’s commitment to creating a greener world. Johnson Construction specializes in green building, eco-friendly home design, and sustainable materials that not only save the planet but also save the homeowner money on utilities in the long run.

In addition to eco-friendly design, Shelby is passionate about sustainably renovating homes that already exist. One of Shelby’s favorite types of projects is rehabilitating old homes to their former glory and fitting them with the green materials of the 21st Century. Another of Shelby’s construction passions is home additions. He specializes in designing and creating home additions that feel like an organic extension of the home that already exists. While Johnson Construction and Gulf Coast Home Designs may be Shelby’s main driving force, he also takes time to advocate for other causes that he cares deeply about.

President

Shelby is the current president of the Escarosa Beekeeper’s Association, a local nonprofit organization supporting honey bee conservation in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Shelby’s work with the Escarosa Beekeeper’s association has helped foster community among local beekeepers, provided an invaluable resource for new and potential beekeepers, and educated the public about the importance of honey bees for pollination. Shelby even worked to add honey bee hives to some of the vast amounts of unused land that belong to the Pensacola Airport, creating a fruitful honeybee community right in the center of Pensacola. It is this kind of creativity and passion for conservation that Shelby brings to every project.

Innovation

When he’s not working on one of Johnson Construction’s many projects or innovating new ways to help conserve honey bees, Shelby enjoys the simpler things in life. He loves connecting with his farm roots by tending to his garden, riding on his tractor, and spending time with his kids. He makes sure to take the time to enjoy the benefits of the wonderful life that he has worked hard to build.

Constructing a World that Works Better.

Shelby’s life and construction philosophy is simple: homes must be designed and built so that the form of the construction follows the function
